Chapter 11

After leaving the port in San Juan, Puerto Rico the ship was scheduled to make its next stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica, but a tropical storm was brewing in the Caribbean Sea. The incoming front had the potential to turn into a hurricane as it traveled over the warm ocean waters. The Captain had a choice to make, either continue course and hope the forecast predictions were off, or reroute between Cuba and Haiti and head to Nassau in The Bahamas. The rotational force, from the outskirts of the storm, was expected to send energy their way, so with either decision, the Esperanza was set to face choppy waters, high winds, and thunderstorms.

Following careful thought and consideration, Cap decided to try and outrun the front, so he set the course due North. The transit was slated to take a minimum of forty-eight hours to reach Nassau. The weather was not far behind the ship, as the winds strengthened in the Caribbean Sea, and blew through Jamaica. It wasn’t long before the tropical storm worked its way up the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and quickly graduated to a class three hurricane. Up to this point, the prediction models still showed the brunt of the impact staying further west, but Cap’s past experiences taught him that more than anything, hurricanes were unpredictable more times than not. In both strength and direction. His call was made, so he maintained the chosen route and hoped for the best.

At the end of Family Feud Adam returned to his room, picked up the lamp sitting on the side table, and smashed it to the ground. The ceramic piece shattered into bits and spread across the carpeted floor like wildfire. He stood there with narrowed eyes and clenched fists, as he panted with heavy breaths. He was irked by the intervention from the medic and the last-minute heroics to save his last target. The kill would have been Adam’s eleventh since he started his crusade. Outside, dark clouds were building, and thunder was roaring as the ship tried to stay ahead of the encroaching storm. The majority of the activities on board had been canceled, and the passengers were asked to stay in their rooms until the cruise was far enough ahead of the weather, and sailing in calmer waters. Not wanting to draw any extra attention to himself, Adam complied, choosing instead to vent his frustrations to Shaun who was in the room.

“You should have seen me up on the stage, Shaun. It was glorious.” Adam paced back and forth in the room with his knife in hand. “The audience was practically eating out of my hands, and my fake show host voice was on point. Everything was going my way. I had my pick of the litter when I selected the teams from the crowd. And I was so generous by only choosing three women. I could have lined up each group, all the way, up and down with potential targets.
